RUSSIANS HITTING BACK ON SALSK FRONT TRAIN-LOADS OF SOVIET TANKS. MOVING UP TO DON ELBOW. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, August 2. The Russians have launched a number of successful counter-at-tacks on the Salsk front, the “Red Star” reports. Heavy fighting has been going on here on a broad front for several days. The paper adds that the Red Army, with active air support, is checking the German advance in the Kletskaya region. The Germans could nowhere claim progress in this region yesterday. , The Vichy radio stated that Marshal Timoshenko is regrouping his forces and launching counter-attacks in the Kuschchovsk area and that fighting is very heavy. A Moscow message says Russian planes, swinging into the battles in the Kushchovsk and Salsk areas, relieved the hard-pressed Cossacks. Train-loads of heavy Russian tanks are moving up to the Don elbow. The tanks are often in action before they are unloaded, repelling air attacks. The trains go to within three to four miles cf the battlefield and the tanks go into action immediately. A German communique states: "Mobile formations of infantry divisions on the Southern Russian front relentlessly pursued the Russians in the direction of Kuban, and broke the resistance of rearguards. Germans and Italians in the Don elbow captuied Russian bridgeheads.” , ~ L , The “Pravda” declared that tens of thousands of crack German troops have been killed on the approaches to Murmansk, Kandalasksha, Louky and Reboly in attempting to capture the railway. All efforts to capture the Kola Peninsula have failed. The “Red Fleet” states that a strong detachment of the Russian Fleet attacked a German-held Black Sea port three days ago, started a huge fire and withdrew safely. A Moscow message says it has been revealed that there has been a big round-up of spies and Fifth columnists behind the lines. Forty-five were executed in one Don sector.
