IN THE RUSSIAN DEFENCES

But Withdrawals Made in Some Areas POSITION SOUTH OF ROSTOV OBSCURE FIERCE HAND-TO-HAND ENGAGEMENTS LONDON, August 2. The position south of Rostov is obscure. The Moscow radio tonight stated that at Salsk, 100 miles south-east of Rostov, the Germans had driven a. deep wedge into the Russian defences. The Russians are stoutly resisting and fierce hand-to-hand engagements are taking place. Cossacks have repulsed repeated tank charges. While Russian withdrawals have been inevitable there is still no breach in the Soviet defences, even though the enemy has made big tank attacks. On the northern front the Russians have improved their positions in one sector, despite repeated enemy counter-attacks.
