SECOND IN THE PAST FIVE WEEKS
Widespread Damage Done IN THE WAIRARAPA AND ELSEWHERE PRIME MINISTER EXPRESSES SYMPATHY TO DISTRICT RESIDENTS Further damage to buildings and chimneys in Masterton and the district generally was caused by a severe earthquake at 12.37 a.m. yesterday. The earthquake was experienced throughout the southern portion of the North Island. In Wellington many buildings were damaged. Wairarapa country areas fared badly. Eketahuna, which was so-severely stricken by the big earthquake on June 24, again suffered seriously. The Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) telephoned the member for Masterton (Mr J. Robertson) yesterday morning to express his sympathy with those who had suffered loss or damage in Masterton or other parts of the district as a result of the latest earthquake, to ask for details of the position, find to offer any help that could be made available. Mr Fraser mentioned that he had heard that Eketahuna had again been hard hit and on being informed that Mr Robertson was about to set out for Eketahuna asked him to ijeport on the position there. Mr Robertson will do so in M ellington today. He left by the first rail-car'this morning.
