RAGING IN THE DON BEND AND SOUTH OF ROSTOV

Indomitable Russian Resistance on Approach to Stalingrad GERMANS USING IMMENSE TRIANGLE OF ARMOURED FORCES ENEMY AGAIN REPULSED WEST OF VORONEZH LONDON, July 31. In South Russia, from Voronezh to the Sea of Azov, the great battle of the Don rages with undiminished intensity. The chief danger point for the Russians is in the extreme south, where the Grmans are pushing into the area south and southeast of Bataisk, trying to prevent the Russians from forming a coherent line. The Russians say that in one or two sectors they have been able to take up new positions and check the German advance. In other sectors they have been compelled to make further withdrawals. The Germans claim to have reached a town on the railway 50 miles south of Rostov and another place further east, about 100 miles from Rostov, on the railway linking the Caucasus with Stalingrad. The Berlin radio says fighting continues for the possession of this vital link. In the Don bend, where the Germans are threatening Stalingrad, fighting is as fierce as any seen in Russia. For a week the Germans have been hammering at the Russian defences. In spite of intense dive-bombing, the Russians are still getting supplies across the river. The Germans are attempting to push forward an immense triangle of armoured forces with infantryin the centre. The Russians are trying to wipe out the tanks and get at the enemy infantry. A new German attack west of Voronezh has been repulsed.
