Mr and Mrs P. A. McHardy, Hawke’s Bay, are visiting Masterton. Mrs Hugh Cooper, Stronvar, has returned from a short visit to Wellington. Advice has been received that Gunner F. T. Renall, of Gladstone, has been reported wounded. Mr A. Coleman, S.M., Feilding, has been appointed chairman of the Government Railways Appeal Board. Mr W. F. L. Ward has been reappointed Acting-Governor of the Reserve Bank for a further term of three months. Information has been received by Mrs S. N. Thomas, Villa Street, Masterton, that her son, Pte. John Eastwood, has been reported wounded. The death has occurred of Sir Geoffrey Syme, managing editor and part proprietor of the Melbourne “Age,” aged 69, a Melbourne cablegram reports. Air Vice Marshal Lloyd has been made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, in recognition of his distinguished service in the Mediterranean, a - British Official Wireless message states. Staff-Sergeant and Mrs W. A. Carswell, Second Avenue, Tauranga, announce the engagement of their second daughter, Valerie, to Flight Sergeant Winston Innis, R.N.Z.A.F., youngest son of Mr and Mrs H. J. Jones, Renall Street, Masterton. Advice has been received in Masterton, that Pte. Fred Wilton, late of the Waingawa staff of Messrs Thos. Borthwick and Sons, Ltd., and a member of last season’s Red Star senior football team, is missing, and is believed to be a prisoner of war. The' death occurred yesterday of Deirdre Marlene, three-year-old daughter of Gunner and. Mrs Robert lan Macdonald, of 22 Kuripuni Street, Masterton. The funeral will take place on Monday, following a service at the Chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service Ltd., at 10.30 a.m., for the Masterton Cemetery.
The wedding took place on Thursday at the Kent Terrace Presbyterian Church, Wellington, when Veronica May, second daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Hutchins, Masterton, was married to Sergeant Leonard Arthur, only son cf Mrs J. R. and the late Mr Stimpson. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. R. Fell..
Mr E. Openshaw, Marton, received information from the Air Ministry, London, that his eldest son, Flying Officer Basil Openshaw, who took part in the big operations on Cologne and Essen, was later reported missing. He has now been informed through the International Red Cross that his son died in June. Flying Officer Openshaw, who was 33 years of age, was educated at Huntley School, Marton, and the Wanganui Collegiate School.
A well-known Auckland and New Zealand Rugby football representative, Second-Lieutenant R. G. Bush, is reported missing, believed prisoner of war. He is almost equally well known as a cricketer. He represented Auckland at football 48 times between 1928 and 1937. He was in Dunedin in 1931 and 1932, when he played for Otago, and he was full-back for the South Island team in the former season. In cricket, Second-Lieutenant Bush represented Auckland in 1932-33, 1933-34, and 1934-35.
The death occurred at the Auckland Hospital of Mr James Lawrence Potter, formerly of Masterton. Mr Potter was born in Masterton, and was educated at St. Patrick’s School. He joined the New Zealand Police. Force in Wellington and was subsequently stationed at Christchurch and Auckland where he had resided for about 30 years. He was promoted to detective and served in this connection until resigning owing to ill-health when he joined the New Zealand night patrol of which he was managing director» until the time of his death. The late Mr Pottei is survived by a widow and one daughter (Mrs Mays, of Auckland). The funeral took place at the Waikumete Cemetery on Wednesday after the celebration of Requiem Mass at St. Benedict's Church. Mrs M. Carrig, Renall Street, Masterton, and Mrs C. Cross, Cornwall Street. Masterton, are sisters of the late Mr Potter.
