BOROUGH AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over the monthly meeting,' of the Carterton Borough Council last evening. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £1059 12s sd. The current year’s rates as advertised in the “Times-Age” were approved. The Wairarapa Power Board wrote stating that it was unable to lower the street lighting charges. The Public Works Department wrote stating that Messrs A. G. Harris and D. J. Burns, Carterton borough surveyors, had submitted a lengthy report concerning the damage to buildings in the business area during the recent earthquake. It was decided on' the motion of the Mayor seconded by Councillor Mortenson, that notices be served on the owners or properties mentioned in the borough report to carry out necessary repairs /forthwith. The cemetery reserve was let to Mr H. W. Harris, Chester Road, Clareville, for a term of 21 years. It was decided that the. attention of the Highways Board be drawn to the damage at present being done in Wakelin Street by the Bren carriers. It was resolved that action be taken against the lessee of the Moreton Road Reserve if fences, drains, etc., were not repaired according to the terms of the lease. Letter Boxes Removed. Some time ago complaints were made by residents that letter boxes had been wrenched from their gate posts and fences and these acts of sabotage ceased when the police took a hand. Now this type of hooliganism has again broken out and more letter boxes are missing while others have been torn down and thrown under hedges. St. Mhrk’s Pipe Organ, The recent earthquake damaged the pipe organ in St. Mark s Anglican Church. Mr H. A. Tustin, an organ expert from Wellington, has made an inspection of the damage and he has reported that repairs costing about £5O will be necessary. The vestry will, at its next meeting, go into the matter of raising money to carry out the repairs.
