HAEGG’S TIME
BEATEN BY AUSTRALIAN. BUT RECORD NOT OFFICIALLY . ESTABLISHED. (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, July 27. George Campbell, a 19-year-old Sydney athlete, has been timed to run the mile in 4min. 3sec. This is 3 l-ssec. faster than the world record established by Gunnar Haegg in Stockholm a fortnight ago. Campbell’s time cannot be accepted as a record. He had two instead of three timekeepers, and the course was measured with a cloth instead of a steel tape. Officials, however, say they are certain no mistakes were made. The Sydney sportsman, Mr George Nathan has offered to guarantee Campbell’s expenses for a trip to America to meet the* world’s best, in races for patriotic purposes. Campbell holds the State native record of 4min. 18 3-ssec. for the mile.
