DEEP IN ORIGIN

EARTHQUAKE RECORDED

LAST NIGHT. NOISE HEARD IN WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 26. The earthquake which was accompanied with considerable noise, at 7.44 o'clock last evening is considered probably to have centred elsewhere than in the Wairarapa, though the distance from ’Wellington was about 50 miles. Probably, too, it was deeper in origin. The record it made at the Dominion Observatory differs from those of recent after-shocks. There can be no certainty about the shake until records from elsewhere have been studied. The shock is estimated at 3 to 4 on the Rossi-Forel scale.
