BRITISH LINER
TORPEDOED OFF AZORES SURVIVORS LANDED IN ENGLAND, RESCUE BY PORTUGUESE DESTROYER. LONDON, July 25. A message from Lisbon says that a Portuguese plane yesterday sighted one of two missing lifeboats with passengers and members of the crew of the British liner, Avila Star, which was torpedoed on July 5 off the Azores. The plane dropped food and water and a message of encouragement and then flew back to direct a Portuguese destroyer to the spot. The destroyer on July 8 rescued 111 passengers and members of the crew of the Avila Star, the majority of whom have been transhipped and already landed in England. Survivors declare that at least two Axis submarines attacked the Avila Star. Seven lifeboats were launched alter the first torpedo hit the ship. The submarine gave the survivors 20 minutes’ grace before launching a second torpedo, which overturned one lifeboat. The Avila Star was carrying women passengers and volunteers from the Argentine for the British Forces.
