Earthquake in Masterton.

A sharp earthquake was felt in Masterton about 5.12 o’clock this morning. Napier Expresses. The express trains between Wellington and Napier proceeded today via the Wairarapa line. This course was taken to relieve congestion on the Manawatu line, owing to a large slip south of Paekakariki necessitating the transhipment of passengers between Paremata and Paekakariki. Scarcity of Seed Potatoes. Addressing delegates to a primary production conference at Palmerston North yesterday, Mr R. B. Tennent, Director of the Fields Division, Department of Horticulture, referred to the serious shortage of seed potatoes in the North Island. He intimated that, though endeavours were being made to secure supplies sufficient for growers, others might be compelled to use table potatoes for planting. It was absolutely essential that potato-growing should reach the maximum and the need existed this year for 10,000 acres planting over last year. This was due in large measure to the failure of the Manawatu and Rangitikei crops last year. Seed potatoes would be unavailable for backyard growers, who were advised to cut the nose-end off table varieties and plant these instead. Air Training Corps.
