Late Closing Again Tonight.
For the first time since the earthquake on June 24, Masterton shops will remain open tonight until 9 o’clock. Army Defaulters. A remit advocating that military defaulters be kept under detention and deprived of their civil rights for ten years, and not set free till members of the New Zealand forces had been rehabilitated to civil life, was passed yesterday by the Dominion conference of the National Party at Wellington yesterday. Seed Potatoes. An indication that a thousand tons of seed potatoes would be required in the next few weeks is given in replies to the New Zealand Grain, Seed and Produce Merchants’ Federation, in response to a Dominion-wide inquiry. Several large merchants in Auckland indicate that they need hundreds of tons to meet customers’ needs. “These potatoes must be made available before the end of August,” said one merchant. “Those clamouring for seed include many farmers dependent upon public transport services for delivery.” Auckland merchants predict that the higher guaranteed price for the coming season’s crop will influence southern commercial growers to retain abnormally large quantities for planting, thus depriving the North Island of muchneeded supplies.
