EARTHQUAKE LOSSES
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Mr Jordan may be right when he says there is no shortage of crockery in Masterton, but the point is many people haven’t the money to spare to pay the high prices asked for even the most everyday ware. In this district many people lost nearly all their jams, preserves and crockery and if it hadn’t been for the kindness of the Red Cross Society sending out a little, some people would have still been eating from a newspaper and drinking from the palm of their hand- It may be news to the mayors of both Masterton and Carterton that quite a few people are living in tents, their washhouse or a whare. Yes and some are in bed with ’flu under these conditions. It is a month today since the earthquake, and so far not one chimney has been repaired. Can the two mayors assure us that no house in either town has had more than one chimney repaired? It is going to cost hundreds and hundreds of pounds to repair the damage in this district and I believe things are worse further down. —Thanking you, yours, etc LONGBUSH. Longbush, July 24.
