On Approaches to Rostov REPEATED ENEMY ATTACKS REPULSED WITH HEAVY LOSSES POSITION'IN VORONEZH REGION FURTHER IMPROVED LONDON, July 23. As the battle of Rostov develops, Russian resistance on the Lower Don grows fiercer. The Russians have strong fortified positions in this area and report having repulsed repeated enemy attacks with heavy losses. The Russians will make every effort to hold the Don line further east, since any largescale enemy break through would make the position of Rostov precarious. There is no confirmation of Axis claims to have crossed the lower Don and reached the outskirts of Rostov itself. Before Voronezh the Russians are still improving their positions and are steadily driving the enemy back to the Don. German resistance was crushed at one point by a large Russian encirclement. North-west of Voronezh an enemy attack with 60 heavy tanks was repulsed, 15 tanks being destroyed.
