GANDHI’S POLICY

OPPOSED BY INDIAN LEADERS STAB IN THE BACK FOR INDIAN TROOPS. BRITISH LABOUR PARTY WARNING. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, July 22. The Calcutta correspondent of the London “Daily Telegraph” says protests against the Wardha resolution are pouring in from all parts of the country, and these are coming from men wrio are devoted to the cause of Indian freedom. Mr Gandhi, for the first time, is witnessing no great stirring of mass enthusiasm, which in the past had always been a prelude to the launching of his disobedience campaigns. In Bombay today Dr B. R. Ambedkar, leader of the depressed classes, said it was the patriotic duty of all Indians to resist as strongly as possible any attempt by the Congress Party to launch a civil disobedience movement. In New Delhi the central organisation of the National War Front, commenting on the Congress working committee’s resolution, says it involves a stab in the back to trie Indian troops. The National Executive Committee of the British Labour Party today adopted a resolution stating that the party, anxious to promote the wellbeing of the Indian people and their aspirations for self-government, reaffirms its call to them to make a further effort to reach a satisfactory settlement in conjunction with the British Government. The committee regards with apprehension the possible effect of civil disobedience on the efforts of the United Nations in the struggle for world freedom. Such political irresponsibility might imperil all freedom-loving peoples and thereby destroy all hope of Indian freedom.
