SALE AT ADDINGTON KEEN COMPETITION FOR SHEEP. RECOVERY IN CATTLE PRICES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 22. At the Addington market today the shortage of sheep was indicated by the keen competition for all classes, the demand being still unsatisfied at the end of the sale. Breeding ewes were in strong demand and prices showed a big rise, despite the medium quality of the offering. The best price was 27s 3d for a line of 65 four-year-olds. Another line of 139 of the same age realised 27s Id. Other lots ranged from 20s (id to 225. A large consignment from Central Otago of very inferior quality ranged from 10s 4d to 15s. A line of 151 wethers from North Canterbury realised 235. the highest price this season. The rest of the yarding ranged from 17s to 24s sd. A pen of 77 hoggets made 27s lOd. The bulk of the fat sheep were medium to good ewes. These met an improved market, and the drop of 2s a head recorded last week was recovered. Wethers were again in short supply and met keen competition, prices being on a par with last week's figures. The best wether price was 49s 7d. and there were several sales between 43s and that figure. Ewes sold up to 34s 7d. most sales ranging from 26s to 30s. In the fat cattle there was a keen demand for all classes of beef and last week’s drop of 20s a head was more than recovered. The average advance for best quality steers was up to 30s a head, and for best cows 20s. One line of Shorthorn steers averaged £2l. and a line of heifers averaged £l5 17s 6d. top price £l6 17s 6d. Best beef ranged up to 45s a 1001 b., special pens. 46s 6d, good 40s to 435, medium 37s 6d to 39s 6d, ordinary to 375, inferior to 325. With a large entry of porkers the fat pig sale began on a parity with last week's rates, but later eased, particularly for heavyweights. which were down about 4s a head. There was no change for lighter weights. The average price a pound was 3*id to 9 3 Jd. Choppers were in fairly heavy supply and the market was slightly easier. A large penning of baconers met a firm sale throughout, the average per pound being 7d to 3‘Ad.
