RIVER CROSSINGS

CAPTURED BY RUSSIANS IN VORONEZH VICINITY. VARIOUS OTHER SUCCESSES. (By Telegraph—-Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, July 22. The Moscow radio says the Russians on July 21 captured two- important river crossings between the Donetz and the Don, near the fork of the rivers. Russian artillery southwards of Voronezh is already firing on a third crossing and the Red Air Force is attacking a fourth. The Russians, on the south-.... ern approaches to Voronezh, captured a large populated place and also broke into the. outskirts of a populated place at the junction of six roads northwards of the city. The “Pravda” states that the Germans are putting up a furious resistance in the Voronezh town area. A big battle is progressing southward of Voronezh. The Germans were thrown out of a strategic point and have retreated to the west bank of the Don. Although the Germans set fire to a bridge, pursuing Russians crossed the river and engaged the enemy. A German infantry division which the Russians routed on the Voronezh front has been reinforced and is again attempting to stem the Russian advance. The Germans north-westwards of Voronezh are hastily constructing earthworks. A German infantry division which penetrated this sector at the beginning of the Voronezh offensive has now retreated to its initial positions. The Russians are practically holding the initiative along the Don. .

TANKS & COAL

WANTED BY RUSSIA. MESSAGE TO BRITISH MINERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, July 22. Coal miners from Moscow have sent a message to the Mineworkers’ Federation conference at Blackpool. The Moscow miners express confidence that the guiding idea of the conference will be to muster all forces in the struggle against Hitler’s Germany and further to increase labour productivity. The mineworkers’ president, Mr Lawther, said there was only one response that could be made. This was an appeal from men who were practically overwhelmed. “Russia,” he said, “wants tanks, not thanks, and coal.”
