JAPANESE LOSSES
THREE MORE DESTROYERS SUNK BY AMERICAN SUBMARINES. IN VICINITY OF KISKA. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 21. A United States Navy communique states that submarines have sunk three Japanese destroyers in the vicinity of Kiska, in the Aleutian Islands. These sinkings are in addition to the five destroyers previously announced as sunk or damaged in the area. Several American air attacks against Kiska Island have been made recently by long-range army bombers. These attacks were centred on the enemy encampment and ships in Kiska harbour, but it has been impossible to observe the results. Army and Navy aircraft are continuing their operations against the enemy forces occupying islands in the Western Aleutians.
ON MAJOR SCALE
ENEMY ACTIVITIES, f ACCORDING TO ALASKAN DELEGATE. (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 22. A Navy Department communique says long-range Army bombers ' have made several air attacks on Kiska recently, concentrating on an enemy encampment and on ships in the harbour. Army and Navy aircraft are continuingjoint operations against the forces occupying the Western Aleutian Islands. Mr Anthony Dimond, delegate to Congress from Alaska, speaking to the Press, said he had received reports that about 25,000 Japanese troops had landed in the Aleutians. These were at Attu, Kiska and Agattu. He said that if these reports were true, it must be assumed that Japanese activities in the Aleutians were of major proportions and not merely a diversion. He voiced an opinion that if the American armed forces failed to drive the Japanese out, it would be a grievous mistake. Mr Dimond said the Japanese were constructing air bases to accommodate land-based bombers for a subsequent drive to Alaska.
