BOROUGH AFFAIRS
MASTERTON COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr T. Jordan), Councillors Kemp, White, Low, Judd, Wilson, Gardner, Jackson, Morice, Grey, Russell and Ninnes. Mr C. Larsen applied for an extension ot his lease. It was decided that the legal position be explained to Mr Larsen. It was decided that the Carterton Borough Council be again approached inviting that body to consider bringing its borough into the Masterton abattoir district. It was decided to join the New Zealand Gas Association, and that Cr. Low be appointed the council representative at the annual meeting in August. It was decided to bring before the annual meeting of the New Zealand Gas Association the matter of the greater use of gas in military camps. The Prime Minister wrote in reply to the council's letter protesting against the increased burden of hospital taxation, advising that consideration of this problem must be left to a more opportune time. A letter was received from the Masterton County Council advising that the allocation o f heavy traffic license fees for last quarter were £164 2s 4d in respect of the Borough of Masterton, in comparison with £2ll 4s ad of the corresponding quarter last year. ' The Wairarapa Interhouse Association wrote applving for the use of the Concert and Social Hall for a further period of three months from August 8. It was decided that the application be granted subject to the same conditions as previously. In connection with the conditions and requirements necessary for the establishment r? a climatological station in the Park, the Park. Hall, Cemetery and Band committees recommended (1) owing to the proximity of veunst trees we are not agreeable to the proposed site in the vicinity of the swing bridge 1 (2) we consider all expenses in connection with the establishment of the station should be borne by the Meteorological Department. The manager of the Regent Theatre wrote asking, for permission to screen pictures on Sunday nights occasionally. On the motion of Cr Ninnes the request was refused, the mover stating that most of the soldiers went away at the weekend.
