CONTRACT FOR SHIPS

CANCELLED IN UNITED STATES PROTEST BY HEAD OF FIRM. PROPOSAL TO BUILD GIANT FLYING-BOATS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 21. The House of Representatives Merchant Marine Committee has appointed a special committee of inquiry into the circumstances of Maritime Commission’s cancellation of the contract of the Higgins Shipbuilding Corporation, to build 200 ships. The Maritime Commission explained that the cancellation was made because of there being insufficient steel available. Mr A. J. Higgins, head of the firm, protested and expressed the opinion that some other reason had prompted the’’cancellation. Mr Higgins said yesterday that his yard would probably build giant flying-boats instead of ships, but declined to elaborate on his statement.
