Mrs C. J. Williams, Masters Crescent, Masterton, is visiting Auckland. Mrs McCracken and Mrs McConnell, Villa Street, Masterton, are on a visit to Napier. Mrs R. S. Cameron, Rangitumau, is staying with her mother, Mrs J. B. Thomson, Hastings. Mrs Marmaduke Bethel, North Canterbury, is staying with her brother, Mr R. F. R. Beetham, Brancepeth. The death occurred at Dargaville on Monday of Mr Patrick Goggin, formerly of Eketahuna, in his 58th year. Word has been received by Mr and Mrs F. Cole, of Masterton, that their son, Lance Bornbadier M. C. Cole, has been wounded in action. Miss I. Kirk, late of the staff of the Wairarapa College, left yesterday for Auckland, where she will take up a position in the Mt. Albert Grammar School. Mr and Mrs H. F. Berkett, Springfields, Manaia, Masterton, announce the engagement of their youngest daughter, Lynda Shirley, to Hilary (■‘Dick”), 2nd N.Z.E.F., son of Mr and Mrs C. Reeve, Main Road, Paraparaumu. The funeral of the late Mrs C. E. Johnston took place yesterday afternoon, there being a large attendance of mourners. The Right Rev. J. Davie officiated. Many beautiful floral tributes were in evidence. Among them were wreaths from, the directors and management of the W.F.C.A. Ltd.; Furnishing Department factory staff, W.F.C.A. Ltd., and the officers and members of Stonehenge Lodge, U.A.O.D. Messrs J. Farrell, J. Butler, R. E. Baker, G. Daubney, L. Curtis and V. Jones were the pall-bearers. A continuous residence of 60 years in Paraparaumu was broken on Friday last by the sudden death at his farm in Valley Road of Mr L. I. Howell. Mr Howell was born at Pahautanui in 1882, and arrived in Paraparaumu at the age of three months with his parents, the late W. B. and Mrs M. A. Howell, who settled on the old family property at Wharemauku. Early in his career Mr Howell carried on a butchery business in Paraparaumu, but for the past 31 years had been engaged in farming He was a foundation member of the Tawera o’ Kapiti Masonic Lodge. Mr Joseph Grant, one of the oldest Gladstone-born settlers of the Wairarapa, being the third son of the late Mr and Mrs Robert Grant, Bannockburn, died in Palmerston North on Thursday. The funeral took place at Otaki, in which district he had resided for the past 20 years. His wife predeceased him in February, and his only sister, Mrs A. F. Stevenson, Woodville, in April. Mr Grant, Avho was 79 years of age, was highly esteemed. Deceased was a notably popular sportsman, riding in Horowhenua hunting and "jumping fixtures for many years, till 1939. Two sons and two daughters, as well as four brothers, are left. Mr Alex Grant, of Masterton, is a brother; and Miss Selina Sutherland, founder of the Masterton Hospital, in 1877, and matron of the Wellington Hospital in 1879-81, was an aunt.
