RED CROSS SHIP
SUNK BY AXIS PLANES IN MEDITERRANEAN' ON RETURN FROM GREECE. AFTER UNLOADING WHEAT CARGO. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.35 a.m.) RUGBY, July 17. The announcement, made from Stockholm, that the Swedish ship Stareborg, on International Red Cross service, has been.sunk by bombers in the Mediterranean, is confirmed by authoritative quarters in London. Today it was stated that the Stareborg was originally under charter to Britain and when the need for an immediate supply of foodstuffs to Greece became obvious, Britain detached the Stareborg from merchant service to the Mediterranean and placed it at the disposal of the International Red Cross. The Stareborg, when sunk, was returning from Greece, after unloading a cargo of wheat. It is stated that no British planes were anywhere near the scene of the attack at that time and it can therefore be assumed that the attack was delivered by Axis aircraft. The International Red Cross had received a safeconduct for the ship from the German and Italian Governments and she was clearly marked and all formalities were complied with.
