NUMBER OF ENEMY TANKS KNOCKED OUT OUR LOSSES NOT YET KNOWN. ACCORDING TO OFFICIAL REPORT. LONDON, July 17. A communique from General Auchinleck’s headquarters states: “Heavy fighting developed yesterday in the central sector, with the enemy continuing his effort to dislodge our troops who had established themselves on the Ruweisak ridge. “Armoured .forces of both sides were engaged in the morning. A number of enemy tanks were knocked out; our own losses are not yet known. In the evening the fighting was resumed in this area, and it continued into the night. “Fighting also continued during the day in the northern sector. In the south the enemy withdrew slightly.”
