No news of today’s operations in Egypt has reached . London. The battle is in progress on and around the ridge /in the central sector which was captured by the British on Wednesday, after an all-night attack. In the evening a big counter-attack was launched, which developed into the present battle, with armoured forces engaged on both sides. The battle is between tanks, with infantry and quantities of guns on each side. General Auchinleck’s attack against the Axis armoured forces is a twofold one—with cruiser and heavy tanks, both British and American, and from the air. Allied planes are attacking enemy armoured forces on the battlefield and when they are moving up from the rear. Fighting continued yesterday in the north and in the south the enemy made a slight withdrawal. At least four enemy planes were shot down yesterday and six British machines are missing.
