A communique from General Auchinleck’s headquarters states: —“In the central sector our forces, which advanced in the early hours of July 15, secured their objectives at the western end of a ridge to the south of El Alamein. Prisoners were taken, but their number is not yet known. A counterattack in the evening by an enemy force, including tanks, was repulsed. “In the northern sector the enemy succeeded in establishing himself at Tel el Isa (five miles west of el Alamein) during the night of July 14-15, while our troops continued to hold the high ground in that area. Yesterday the enemy was heavily shelled by our artillery, and a number of enemy tanks were destroyed in this sector by our land and air forces.” Our aircraft, the communique adds, again attacked the enemy in force.
