IN PROGRESS IN SOUTH RUSSIA

Attempts to Halt Drives on Stalingrad and Rostov GERMANS DIGGING IN WEST OF VORONEZH ENEMY SHIPS SUNK IN ARCTIC BY SOVIET \ FLEET AIR ARM , LONDON, July 16. The Russian Army is now fighting critical battles in an attempt to stem the German drives towards Stalingrad, and Rostov. Around Voronezh the position is apparently better today, though still critical. In some places the Russians have launched big counter-attacks. West of Voronezh a town which the Germans claimed to have taken nine days ago, the enemy is digging in. There is no fresh news of the German thrusts further south, though it appears that the German tanks are moving at a great pace and have covered 90 miles in four days. In Arctic waters the Russian Fleet Air Arm has successfully attacked a German convoy. An 8000-ton transport was among a number of vessels sunk.
