“TANK-BUSTERS”

NO TYPE YET FINALLY APPROVED TURN TO FIGHTER-BOMBERS. ACHIEVEMENTS OF BRITISH MACHINES. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 15. “Tank-busters” — fighter aircraft equipped with weapons capable of penetrating the armour of tanks — were discussed in informed quarters today. It was stated that the idea that there was a standard class of aircraft called the tank-buster was inaccurate. The evolution of such a machine is an additional commitment of every country, but no satisfactory type has yet been evolved, and all the nations are still groping for a solution. There are indications that the Germans are turning from dive-bombers to fighter-bombers. Dive-bombers are extremely formidable when anti-air-craft and fighter opposition is negligible, but recently there was a report of fourteen dive-bombers shot down out of fifteen. On the other hand, the British fighter-bomber has had considerable success in the Middle East. The fighter-bomber is able to deliver bombs by the use of a gunsight. The angle of dive when approaching the target is shallower than that of the dive-bomber but the fighter-bomber is considerably easier to manoeiivre if attacked.
