Miss C. Hosking, Church Street, Masterton, is visiting Wellington.

Mrs S. Agar, Levin, is staying with her mother, Mrs R. C. Drummond. Mrs P. J. Borthwick, “Eridge,” Lansdowne, has been visiting Hawke’s Bay. Mrs E. Horne, Cole Street, Masterton, will leave this week to spend a holiday at Paekakariki. Mr Bert Irvine, who had been the popular manager of the Regent Theatre, Masterton, for a considerable time, has gone into camp. Miss Christina Young, Petone, a mezzo-contralto, formerly well known in Wellington musical circles, has joined the Carl Rosa Opera Company, in England, and was to have made her first appearance in “11 Trovatore” in Liverpool under that management last month.

A motion of condolence was passed at yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton County Council with the relatives of the late Messrs J. McGillicuddy and R. Wilton, two former members of the council. Both councillors, said the chairman, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, had done their work well and looked after the ratepayers’ interests. The death has occurred at Gisborne of Dr James Lewis Reed, aged 77. He was for many years medical superintendent of the district hospital, Waipukurau. The late Dr Reed commenced practice in Waipawa in 1887. He served in the Great War in Egypt, England, and France, holding the rank of major. Sir John Reed, a former Supreme Court judge, and Mr Vernon H. Reed, were brothers. The Rev H. E. K. Fry, vicar of Lower Hutt, has accepted appointment from the Bishop of Wellington, the Rt Rev H. St. Barbe Holland, as clerical canon of the Cathedral Church of St Paul. He fills the vacancy caused by the resignation of Canon J. H. Sykes, formerly of Masterton and Greytown, who has been appointed canon emeritus of the cathedral. One of the vacant lay canonries has been filled by the Bishop’s appointment of Mr H. E. Evans and the other will be filled at a combined meeting of the chapter and standing committee during Synod. The two new lay canons take the places of the late Sir George Shirtcliffe and the late Mr J. W. Henderson.
