MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL LIGHTING RESTRICTIONS. ADDITIONAL WARDENS TO BE APPOINTED. The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday afternoon, the chairman, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, presiding over a full attendance of councillors. Councillor W. I. Armstrong reported that the District Highways Council had reduced the main highways estimates by 30 per cent. The Puketiri and Wangaehu bridges had been cut out altogether. In view of the damage to roads resulting from the recent earthquake, the Clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley, was asked by the council to make representations to see if increased provision could be made to meet the additional expenditure involved in repairing earthquake damage. The action of the chairman and county clerk regarding negotiations in respect to matters relating to the Ruamahanga River at Te Whiti was endorsed. A definite ruling was forwarded by thc authorities that no petrol.allowances were being made for lighting wardens in country areas. It was suggested that the position could be met by the appointment of additional wardens. On Councillor G. Moore's motion, the council decided that all wardens should be notified that the lighting restrictions had to be observed and that they should each receive official notification from the county in respect to the duties involved. The council also agreed to make inquiries as to the appointment of additional wardens. On the motion of Councillor H. H. Mawley, the Clerk was directed to obtain an estimate of the cost of repairs to a bridge at. the nine-mile peg on the Masterton-Weber Road.
