RAILWAY SERVICE
MASTERTON=PAHIATUA SECTION i HOPES OF- LINE BEING OPEN THIS EVENING. MANY SLIPS & WASHOUTS. Railway communication north of Masterton is still interrupted as the result of yesterday’s storm but there is some prospect that the line will be reopened late this afternoon or early this evening. The line is open between Masterton and Wellington. The slips at each end of the tunnel south of Eketahuna were cleared last night. North of Eketahuna there is a slip just south of Mangatainoka and washouts have occurred at two or three places between Pahiatua and Hukanui. It was hoped to effect repairs at these points today. It appeared possible that the 6 p.m. rail-car northward would resume running this evening. The mail trains were running today between Masterton and Wellington, A slip came down at 6 6p.m. yesterday on the line between the Summit and Kaitoke, but this has since been cleared. A northward bound rail-car was held up.
