MERSA MATRUH

WELL BLASTED BY SHELLS .. & BOMBS. (Received This Day, 1.0 p:m.) LONDON, July 13. In their attack on Mersa Matruh, British light naval forces, from close inshore, raked the harbour with salvo after salvo of shells, also shelling anti-aircraft gun positions. There was no opposition from the shore defences after the first few rounds. One nava! airman said: “Hell was knocked out cf Mbrsa Matruh.” Naval aircraft swooped on the harbour, plastering it with bombs, while shellbursts from the British fleet ringed the harbour. Several enemy ships were damaged in the harbour. The British units were undamaged and all the naval aircraft returned to their base.
