MADE BV THE JAPANESE IN CHINA BID FOR WHOLE CHEKIANG COAST. / EXTENSION OF AMERICAN BOMBING. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CHUNGKING, July 12. The Chinese High Command announced that the Japanese have occupied Futou Island, near the port of Foochow. An attempted landing on Songchi Island was repulsed. A Japanese pincers is advancing against the treaty port of Wenchow, in the Chekiang Province, after the landing of troops at Juian and to the south, and also the capturing of Tsingtein, to the north. The junction of the two forces, which are at present 30 miles apart, would mean that the Japanese would have succeeded in embracing virtually the entire coast of Chekiang. The Japanese claim the capture of Wenchow. The American air leader, BrigadierGeneral Chennault, referring _ to the raids on Japanese-occupied cities, declared that they were only a beginning of a mighty aerial assault upon every Chinese centre in enemy hands. “There has been a definite change of policy since July 1,” he said. “Hankow, Canton, and other cities in occupied China which have not been bombed before have been bombed now. We are going deeper and deeper into China. All the cities under Japanese occupation will be bombed. There will be a more active policy henceforth. “You can draw your own conclusions about what will happen. The handwriting was on the wall from July 1.”
