CARTERTON AREA
LOW-LYING COUNTRY UNDER WATER. ! LEAKS IN BUILDINGS CAUSE DAMAGE. Residents of Carterton and district who suffered through the recent earthquake are now enduring a second dose of damage, this time through leaky roofs. Wall papers have been ruined and many business places have had to remove much of their stock to save it from damage. Heavy flooding has occurred in the district. The Waiohine River ■ backed up the Maungaterere at its junction near the main highway bridge, with the result that the flood waters ran feet deep over the road for over a quarter of a mile. Only big lorries and buses were able to pass through. At Dalefield, the Kaipatangata and Hinaka streams could not carry the torrent of water and country in the neighbourhood was inundated. Water flowed across the Dalefield road in the vicinity of the Dalefield Dairy Factory and the railway. The roadway near Mr C.. Zillwood’s homestead was also inundated and the southern end of Lincoln Road was likewise under water. At Belvedere much low-lying country is under water. The flooding at the Waiohine bridge forced car drivers back and they tried their luck by way of the Matarawa bridge. After crossing that bridge, however, they found they were stopped from getting home by way of Dalefield owing to heavy flooding in that area. A return journey was made to Greytown where cars were left for the night and their passengers returned by bus. At Swamp Road the Waiohine and Maungaterere rivers flooded the road' and countryside for a considerable distance. The bridge leading off the main highway was completely awash with water. _ Brooklyn Road, west of Lincoln Road, Carterton, was flooded and the country for several miles was a sheet of water. At Ahiaruhe the Ruamahanga River submerged the whole of the low-lying country as far as the eye could see, but residents did not think the flood was as bad as that experienced last year.
