MORE SALUTING

ORDERED BY GENERAL BLAMEY. TIGHTER DISCIPLINE WANTED IN AUSTRALIA. (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, July 8. Australian soldiers must salute officers at all times on and off duty, except in crowded thoroughfares, or assemblies, or during field exercises. This amendment of the military'regulations has been announced by the Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, following its approval by the War Cabinet. The recommendation was made by General Blarney, who urged that the present situation in Australia and the disposition of the troops at battle stations called for general improvement in the standard of discipline. General Blarney considered that relaxation of saluting had contributed toward casualness and carelessness and lack of smartness. This was dangerous; because it tended to break down the disciplined state of mind so important to soldiers under active service conditions.
