BEATEN BACK
RAIDERS TRYING TO REACH PORT MORESBY. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) SYDNEY, July 7. Patrolling Allied fighters on Monday prevented a strong force of Japanese bombers from raiding Port Moresby. The enemy planes were compelled to turn for home before they could reach their objective. This is revealed in the latest Allied Headquarters communique, which states that 20 enemy bombers, with fighter escort, were intercepted by Allied fighters. Several bombers were hit by ma-chinge-gun fire, and one of our planes is missing. The raiding aircraft were forced to drop their bombs where they, did no damage. This was the third successive day on which enemy planes have attempted to raid Port Moresby. On Monday Allied aircraft made a further light raid on the building area at Tulagi, in the Solomons.
