ON APPROACHES TO RIVER DON

German Claims Still Unconfirmed BUT SITUATION DESCRIBED AS EXTREMELY GRAVE EVIDENCE OF ENORMOUS ENEMY LOSSES LONDON. July 7. The Russians are fighting with their backs to the wall on the western bank of the River Don for possession of the vitally important junction town of Voronezh. The “Red Star’’ describes the situation as extremely grave. Masses of German tanks are lined up in readiness, all along the river banks. Russian planes .discovered one huge concentration of tanks and managed to smash many of them in a mass raid. The Germans are trying to throw pontoon bridges across the river. The Germans already claim the capture of'Voronezh, that German troops have now advanced beyond that centre and that further bridgeheads have been established across the Don. The Russians do not confirm the loss of Voronezh, though all messages from Moscow tonight emphasise the gravity of the situation. The “Isvestia” says the enemy has driven a wedge into the Russian positions on a comparatively narrow sector and is now endeavouring to widen the gap. Fighting is daily growing in intensity. The Germans are rushing up more men, tanks, guns and planes in an effort to widen the approaches to the river. While the Germans are making their assaults with complete disregard of the thousands of dead lying on the battlefield, the Russians are fighting back with magnificent spirit. Six long trains loaded with wounded are reported to have left already for the German rear. It is pointed out that although Voronezh is on the main railway from Moscow to Rostov, there are a number of branch lines which would enable the Russians to maintain through communications even with Voronezh in enemy hands.
