Mrs Budge, Hawera, is visiting Mrs Carey, Lansdowne. Mrs P. J. Borthwick, Lansdowne, has returned from a visit to Auckland. Mrs A. G. Wilder, Hawke’s Bay, spent the weekend with Miss McLaren, Renall Street, Masterton.

Mrs N. Smith, who had spent a few days with her mother, Mrs C. G. Monro, Lansdowne, has returned to Wellington. The death of Mr Cecil Milton Hill, for many years part proprietor of the “Taranaki Daily News,” occurred at New Plymouth yesterday. He was before that on the staff of the “Wanganui Chronicle.” Fie was a keen student of Maori lore and customs.

The engagement is announced of Beris Myra, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Y. Boyes, Dixon Street, Masterton, to Charles Kenneth Hinder, R.N.Z.A.F., elder son of Mrs E. Hinder, Hamilton, and the late Mr E. K. D. L. Hinder, Sydney, New South Wales. The Most Rev. Thomas O’Shea, Archbishop of Wellington and Metropolitan of Now Zealand, has gone to Dunedin to attend the golden jubilee of the ordination to the priesthood of the Rt. Rev. James Whyte, Catholic Bishop of Dunedin. He was accompanied by the Rt. Rev. J. M. Liston, Bishop of Auckland, Monseignor Ormond, and many members of the clergy. The funeral of the late Mr A. A. Harris took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon, there being a large attendance of mourners. Wreaths were sent by the staff of Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and by Messrs Tatton Bros., Ltd., besides many others from private sympathisers. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. Baghurst, T. Stombles, P. McLaughlin, P. Cotter, T. Harris and B. .Walker.

The death has occurred at Bulls, of Mr E. A. Caldow, younger son of Mr R. T. Caldow, Wellington, and brother of Mr W. E. Caldow, secretary of the Royal Wellington Choral Union, and Miss Mina Caldow, the Auckland contralto. Mr Caldow, who was 54 years of age, was a resident of Wellington for some years. At one time he took an active interest in racing, and was owner of Volo and other horses.

Advice has been received in Waipukurau of the death in action in Egypt of Temporary Captain. Robert George Brasell. Captain Brasell, who was aged 28, was dux of both the primary and secondary departments of the Waipukurau High School. He left New Zealand as a corporal, gaining his commission on active service. He was a prominent footballer and cricketer, and an excellent all-round athlete.

At the annual meeting of the Wellington College Old Boys’ Association officers were elected as follows: President, Mr Justice Blair; vice-presi-dents, Messrs H. Desborough and A. J. Curtis; auditors, Messrs O. G. Kember and Son; secretary, Mr W. W. Cpok; assistant secretary, Mr C. A. Innes; treasurer, Mr B. O. Binnie; committee, Colonel R. St. J. Beere, D. 5.0., Lieut.Colonel A. L. George and Messrs T. E. Beard, J. R. Cuddie, R. W. Darroch, A. W. Duncan, C. D. MacDonald, L. McKenzie, E. S. Hobson, B. P. Julian, H. C. Middlebrook, M. C. Barnett, W. H. Denton and A. R. Meek, and representatives of the old boys’ sports club. The death occurred suddenly yesterday afternoon of M.T Thomas Baird, a prominent Southland sportsman, who had been first assistant at Middle School for many years, says a Press Association telegram from Invercargill. He was 49 years old. He was a former Southland Rugby representative and a brilliant track runner. Wellknown in racing circles in Southland, he was a successful owner and breeder. One of his best horses was the Sutala mare Cough, twice winner of the Wyndham Cup and the holder of the mile and a quarter record for Otago and Southland. Other successful gallopers raced by Mr Baird were Good As Gold, which won races in Australia and on metropolitan courses in New Zealand, Marquee and Valdamo,
