ARTILLERY BATTLE
NEW ZEALANDERS IN ACTION. 25-POUNDERS STOP GERMAN TANKS. (Received This Day, 1.0 p.m.) (Official War Correspondent, N.Z.E.F.) CAIRO, July 4. New Zealanders and South Africans who stopped and put to flight forty enemy tanks, late on Thursday night, had a terrific artillery battle with the Germans. The New Zealanders, who were supporting the spearhead of the British attack, suddenly fell upon forty Axis tanks roaming across the desert, awaiting a chance to strike. The New Zealanders calmly allowed the German tanks to approach within close range before opening fire. 'With a terrific firepower, the New Zealand 25-pounders stopped the German tanks. The latter withstood the fire for only a short time and then wheeled about and withdrew. The New Zealanders were in action all day yesterday. One of the battle groups, commanded by a Rangiora bri-
gadier, attacked the enemy in the rear, from the south, causing great havoc and confusion among the enemy.
