OPINION IN LONDON
BATTLE HAS GONE WELL SO FAR ROMMEL’S COMMUNICATIONS PROBLEM. TOBRUK MAY BECOME VERY IMPORTANT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) RUGBY, June 5. The view taken in London of this morning’s Middle East communique is that it indicated no outstanding change in the Alamein battle. The withdrawal of the enemy armoured forces under pressure is probably only local, The Germans seek to explain their inability to smash through by referring to the fortified system near the Alamein position. It is considered that the battle so far has gone satisfactorily. It is also remarked that while the Axis still has the advantage of the nearness of its home bases, Rommel’s lines of communication have been stretched to 700 miles from Benghazi and a thousand from Tripoli. Consequently, if he were pinned down, much .might depend on his ability to use Tobruk as a port. Even Tobruk is now 300 miles behind the present battle line.
