AGAINST U-BOATS
ANGLO=AMERICAN JOINT ACTION DEVELOPMENT OF CLOSE CO-OPERATION. SOME SPECIFIC EXAMPLES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) RUGBY, July 3. It is learned in London that the British Director of Anti-Submarine Warfare was in America some months ago to give the United States naval authorities the benefit of his experience. This is a further step in the close cooperation that exists between London and Washington in fighting the submarine menace. United States naval units have been from last September shuttling with British units in the operation of the Atlantic convoy system, but it is possible that they were not entirely ready to put their own system into operation when they entered the war. For this reason the British Admiralty has tendered advice and everything is being done to assist the Americans with actual equipment. A Washington message says it is officially announced that many British and Canadian corvettes, destroyers and fully-equipped anti-submarine vessels have been for some time operating with the American forces in the Atlantic both on escort duty arid in the campaign against the submarines along the eastern seaboard.
A good many of the 50 over-age American destroyers which were traded to Britain for bases had returned to help patrol the United States coast. MORE LOSSES AMERICAN & BRAZILIAN SHIPS. RAIDERS USING NEW TYPE OF GUN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 3. The Navy Department has announced that submarines sank two American .and one Brazilian vessel, with a total loss of four lives. The Brazilian ship was lost off the South American coast. Survivors from another Brazilian ship, which was sunk by a submarine on June 26, state that U-boats are using a new type of retractable deck gun, enabling the submarine to shell as soon as it surfaces. The submarine used this gun on their vessel, then lowered it flush with the deck. A new deck hatch obviates the gunners’ emergence through the.conning tower. The Navy Department has announced that Admiral Hart has been placed on the retired list, with the full rank of Admiral.
