SPREAD THROUGH GERMAN LINES IN EGYPT
Ceaseless Harrying By Night Raiders NEW ZEALANDERS DESTROY MANY ENEMY TANKS GOOD WORK DONE BY "JOCK COLUMNS” (By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, July 3. Allied raiding’ columns are giving the Germans no rest at night, says a British United Press correspondent with the Eighth Army. New Zealanders in the late twilight took guns into no man’s land and destroyed many German tanks, which could be seen burning throughout the night. The crews were either trapped inside or caught by Tommy-gun fire as they tried to escape. “Jock columns,” named in memory of the late Jock Campbell, V.G., who is the idol of every member of the Eighth Army, repeatedly creep from the British lines, zig-zag over trails within the dust-bowl, and then break into the enemy’s lines, spreading fire and terror. One column invaded an aerodrome and destroyed two planes.
