POWERFUL ATTACK
MADE BY HEAVY BOMBERS ON BREMEN WIDESPREAD FIRES STARTED. RAID-FREE NIGHT IN BRITAIN. LONDON, July 3. Four-engined Halifaxes, Stirlings and Laneasters formed a large part of the powerful force of K.A.F. planes which attacked Bremen last night. They left widespread fires burning, several in the dock area. The enemy sent up night fighters, one of which was shot down. The loss of 13 bombers is not considered high in view of the powerful force sent out on this raid. The British attack was concentrated into a period of 40 minutes in view of the strengthened defences and in order to embarrass the enemy fire-fighters. Airfields in the Low Countries and German shipping oil the Netherlands coast were also attacked. Britain had a raid-free night, This evening enemy aircraft flew over an area in the north-west of England for the first time for nearly six months. The last attack on Bremen was on Monday night. Last Thursday it was pounded for 75 minutes by more than 1000 bombers, and there have also been two other recent heavy raids. An Air Ministry communique states that a small force of our bombers attacked enemy shipbuilding yards at Flensburg yesterday afternoon. Two bombers are missing.
