SAVAGE “REPRISAL”

JAPANESE WIPE OUT CITY OF CEBU WARNING AGAINST GUERILLA ACTIVITY. ■ PEOPLE SHOW UNDAUNTED SPIRIT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 30. Lieutenant-Colonel Carlos Romulo, aide-de-camp to General MacArthur, who has arrived in Washington from Australia, revealed that the Japanese wiped out the city of Cebu, in the Philippines, on May 22 as a reprisal for guerilla activities by citizens of Cebu. The Japanese then broadcast to all the Philippines citing the action of Cebu as a warning against further guerilla activity. Colonel Romulo said that even the women of Cebu were sniping at the Japanese, who were unable to prevent the sniping. He said the burning of the city would not prevent it either. Cebu’s peace time population was about 90,000.
