NO LABOUR

SERIOUS POSITION REPORTED AT EKETAHUNA DELAY IN EFFECTING REPAIRS. TELEGRAM SENT TO PRIME MINISTER. A serious position has arisen at Eketahuna owing to shortage of labour to effect urgent repairs to earthquake damage. Not a business place in Eketahuna escaped damage in the earthquake. Many buildings were wrecked and 400 first-line chimneys require urgent repairs. A meeting of business men and others was held in Eketahuna last night, when it was stated that although the material was available, there were no carpenters, and only one plumber and four bricklayers to effect repairs. Stock was being damaged by rain. The meeting decided to send a telegram to the Prime Minister, drawing attention to the urgent need of providing labour without further delay, as the position was serious. Another meeting is to be held tonight with the Mayor and his committee, with a view to formulating a working scheme.
