TRANSPORT CONTROL
EMERGENCY REGULATIONS. , LOCAL COMMITTEES TO BE FORMED. The executive of the Wairarapa branch of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance met recently to consider the transport control emergency regulations, which were gazetted last week, and which provide for the control of all licensed public goods transport. The regulations are a war-time measure and are for the purpose of conserving tires and petrol. Tires have become a major problem, and the Alliance decided Bo carry the regulations into effect immediately. The main provisions in the regulations provide for the setting up by the Minister of Transport Control Committees in various districts. Three committees are to be appointed in the Wairarapa, the northern district comprising Pahiatua, Pongaroa and Eketahuna; the central district Mauriceville, Masterton, Carterton and Gladstone, and the southern district Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough.
The functions of the committees will be to receive and allocate all orders for the carriage of goods and stock, and it is hoped that users of transport will co-operate by placing their orders well in advance of requirements so that the committees can arrange for two-way loading. The regulations also provide that no person shall carry goods or stock by motor vehicle for hire or reward except with the permission of the committee.
