CARELESS TALK
1 THAT MAY ASSIST ENEMY. DENOUNCED BY ADMIRAL GHORMLEY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 30. “New Zealand is in a hot spot,” said Vice-Admiral Ghormley, Commander-in-Chief of the South Pacific Area, at a Press conference in Auckland today. “It is imperative for the public to understand that, and for them to guard against giving away information in idle talk that may be of assistance to the enemy.” He said there was too much careless talk about things people saw and heard. If they would look at the general picture of the war, instead of merely at the local picture, they would understand this. In describing New Zealand as a “hot spot,” the Admiral was not referring to any particular development or recent happening, but to lend point to the geographical fact that the Dominion is in the front line area of the Pacific theatre of war. Admiral Ghormley would offer no comment in regard to a story published in the “Christian Science Monitor” on May 8, stating that he would have supreme command over all the land, sea and air forces of the four allies in a vast South Pacific area where the Japanese are expected to attempt to cut the Australian-New Zealand-American lines of communication. Regarding many other ques-; tions that were submitted, Admiral Ghormley had nothing to say for publication.
