BOROUGH AFFAIRS

CARTERTON COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS HOME GUARD AND PETROL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presiding. There (Were also present Crs. E. McKenzie, W. A. Hart, H. Mortensen, L. M. Clark, C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey, W. R. Harry and O. W. Wolters. An apology for absence was received from Cr. H. E. Jackson. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the bank of £73 19s 4d in the general account and £1,369 5s 2d on deposit at the Post Office Savings Bank. There was a credit of £279 14s 2d in the Gasworks Account. The secretary-manager of the Wairarapa Power Board wrote stating that the board had decided to make a rebate in connection with the Mercury Vapour street lamp lighting system to the extent of £6 17s for each of the seven lights involved. The question of street lighting generally was considered, and on the motion of Cr. Harry, the following resolution was carried'. “That the Board’s attention be drawn to the fact that a reduction in the price of street lighting would be facilitated by the use of lower power, lamps and the consequent decrease in lamp breakages.” The Sanitary Inspector wrote in regard to the suggested supply of water from an adjacent creek to be diverted into the sewer for use in case of fire in an emergency, stating that in his opinion owing to the slow movement of water through the main it would not suffice for the purpose suggested. In any case it would be found that household sewage connections in the circumstances would not be able to function properly. It was decided that the Sanitary Inspector be thanked for the information contained in his letter. It was decided that the secretary of the Wairarapa Automobile Association be notified that the open drain on the roadway, at South Carterton, was the responsibility of the Main Highways Board and not the Borough Council. The application by the Carterton Picture Co. for a license for the King’s Theatre was left in the hands of the Mayor and Town Clerk.

It was decided to approve of the appointment of Messrs A. G. Harris and D. J. Burns as borough surveyors in connection with earthquake damage. The Clerk was authorised to forward a letter of appreciation to the proper quarters in connection with the valuable services rendered by the soldiers during the earthquake period. It was decided to thank the wardens for the thoroughness of their survey of the borough in connection with the damage done by the earthquake. The Mayor said that several members of the Home Guard found it difficult to meet the expense of petrol to attend parades. It was resolved to ask the Wairarapa South County Council to co-operate with the Borough Council in paying half the cost of petrol for Home Guardsmen travelling over five miles.

Tenders are to be called for the lease of the Cemetery Reserve for a term of 21 years as from August 1. It was decided also to advertise for a standby engine for the gas works to be used in case of emergency. Mr R. Smith was appointed supervisor of chimney building for the borough of Carterton in connection with the earthquake damage.

It was decided to compliment the gas manager and his staff on the manner in which they had carried out their duties during the earthquake.
