BRAND NEW TANKS
ARRIVAL IN BRITISH LINES SITUATION CRITICAL. BUT NO TENDENCY TO TAKE DESPONDENT VIEW. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 30. The correspondent of the British United Press-with the Eighth Army reports, “Brand new tanks have just reached our lines,” he saw them racing up from Alexandria faster than he had believed tanks could travel. “The hour is critical; it would be foolish not to acknowledge it,” he adds. There never was any intention of putting up a static defence of Mersa Matruh, says “The Times” Cairo correspondent. “On the first sign of the enemy attempting to surround it our troops were withdrawn, and all supplies were removed. The correspondent adds: “There is no tendency to take a despondent view of the situation. The Eighth Army has been strongly reinforced and is fighting with dogged determination.” The Rome radio, commenting on the fall of Mersa Matruh, said: “Italy realises this road to Alexandria is not open. It will still require heavier fighting.”
