Loasby, of Carterton, who was previously reported as missing, is now officially believed to be dead. Mr L. W. McKenzie has been appointed to the Victoria College Council, representing the secondary schools in the college district. Mr and Mrs H. F. Berkett, “Springfields,” Manaia Road, Masterton, announce the engagement of their eldest daughter, Mauville Margaret, W.A.A.F., to Harry, R.N.Z.A.F., youngest son of Mr and Mrs S. Nunns, Childers Road, Gisborne.

The death occurred recently of a well-known Wellington retailer, Mr Albert Ernest (Bert) Cox, aged 39. He was in business as a tobacconist in Willis Street for eight years. Before that he was employed for many years in the signals branch of the Railways Department. The death occurred in Wellington on Monday at Eastbourne, of Mr Robert Noble Jones, C.8.E., formerly chief judge of the Native Land Court. Mr Jones, who was 78 years of age, was born in Belfast, Ireland, but came to New Zealand as an infant. Mr Jones qualified as a solicitor in Gisborne in 1890, and as a barrister nine years later. He was appointed a judge of the Native Land and Validation and Appellate Courts in 1903. He was promoted chief judge in 1918, a position he held till his retirement in 1939, his term in the Chief Judgeship constituting a record. He was also Undersecretary of the Native Department from 1921 till 1931.
