WAR ON U-BOATS

O. IN AMERICAN ATLANTIC WATERS GERMANS ADMIT FIERCE ATTACKS. FLEET OF SMALL CRAFT BEING ORGANISED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 28. An admission in a German communique today that the Axis submarines in Atlantic waters are encountering fierce American defence is regarded as an indication of the increased efficiency of the United States’ anti-submarine forces. While it is undeniable that the submarine menace is still serious along the Atlantic coast, the new measures which the navy has instituted recently, such as convoying along the coasts and the greater use of small boats, is expected to check the submarine toll and eventually reduce it sharply. In a move to pit a great fleet of small boats against enemy submarines, the Navy Department has asked all owners of seagoing craft to volunteer the services of themselves and their vessels. It is hoped that thousands of additional boats will join the patrols, which are conducted at present by 1200 craft.
