TREASON CHARGES
MEN GAOLED IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA CRIME PUNISHABLE BY DEATH. CONSPIRACY TO ASSIST JAPAN, (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) PERTH, June 29. Laurence Frederick. Bullock, 35, organiser for the Primary Producers’ Association, and Charles Leonard Williams, 30, insurance agent, who were found guilty by a jury in the Criminal Court of having conspired to assist within the Commonwealth the armed forces of Japan, have been sentenced by Chief Justice Sir John Northmore. Bullock is sentenced to three years’ hard labour and Williams to two years’ hard labour. The jury had recommended Williams to mercy. “To assist the public enemy is treason and is punishable by death,” said the Chief Justice to Bullock and Williams. “You have been fortunate in that you have not done any actions to implement the conspiracy. You, Bullock, are undoubtedly the ringleader.” To Williams, the Chief Justice said he had readily entered into the conspiracy, but as the jury had recommended him to mercy he would receive two years’ imprisonment.
